Mental Health, Spiritual Health, and Physical Health – Are they intertwined?

In chiropractic, we deal with the Neuromusculoskeletal system, three systems that are so interconnected that they can be referred to as a single system. An irritated nerve root can cause muscle cramping. Muscle cramping over time can lead to deviation of joints and cause such things as scoliosis. Really, it’s like the chicken or the egg analogy. We may never know what condition started the others, so we treat them all.

As science progresses, we see more evidence as to how mental health can cause diseases of physical health. For example, they used to say “he died of a broken heart”. Science now knows this can actually happen. You may even know someone who has gotten under so much stress that they had a heart attack. Even the symptoms of an anxiety attack are closely related to those of a heart attack.

There is now evidence that mental injury (trauma) can cause physical changes in the way the brain operates. This change then causes changes in physical health. For example, enough mental trauma can cause someone to live in a state of “survival”, which can drain adrenal function, increase heart rate, change pupil dilation, change urinary output, and cause weight loss. In fact, there are studies showing that mental stresses may lead to changes in immune function and trigger Lupus. You’ve probably seen people get stressed to the point of getting sick.

Physical health can lead to issues in mental health. We have seen spouses who struggle with daily headaches. This causes irritability and sometimes leads to stress in the marriage. There are many people who suffer from fibromyalgia. In many of these cases, pain causes mental stress and then mental stress increases their level of pain and tenderness. It can be a very tough cycle to get out of. Eventually, many of these cases turn a person to a sedentary lifestyle with depression.

In the end, every doctor and every person has a mortality rate of 100%. When it comes to spiritual health, spiritual people tend to be a peace when they face health’s biggest hurdle: death. Even someone who has terminal cancer can be at peace and have a better quality of life in their final months if they have trust in their spiritual beliefs. Being alive doesn’t have to be about suffering and worry. It can be about understanding the process of life and living it optimally with the cards we are dealt.
